TIKKUN ARCHIVES

Tikkun Magazine began publication in 1986, providing a crucial bridge between Jewish and non-Jewish communities by uniting progressive politics with the prophetic values of Judaism and other religions.

Founded in Berkeley, California by Rabbi Michael Lerner and Nan Fink Gefen, the magazine initially launched as an alternative to the neoconservative publication Commentary, recognizing within the world’s faith traditions a universal human hunger for love and meaning.

The magazine’s mission, Tikkun Olam (heal the world) remains as essential today as ever before, and we are providing this archive as an on-going contribution to the social transformation and spiritual renewal that human beings retain the capacity to imagine and accomplish.

By bringing together voices from disparate communities, Tikkun created space for the emergence of an activist religious and humanist Left. Tikkun became world-famous as the first serious Jewish intellectual and cultural magazine to systematically critique the Israeli Occupation of the West Bank and Gaza and to challenge the materialism and spiritual deadness that a new generation of Jews were experiencing in many of the formal institutions of the Jewish world.
